Fundamentals of Neuroscience, Part 1: The Electrical Properties of the Neuron

Institution: HarvardX (edX)

Date: November 2, 2013 - January 17, 2014

Bio: Though the course was advertised on edX, it is hosted on a separate website and has a unique content delivery system. This includes animated lectures, 'field trips' to various museums, DIY lab demonstrations, and unique interactive video/labs. The content focuses on an abstract intuitive understanding about how the nervous system works, and how the various systems and variables interact in relation to each other. There is also supplemental material that goes into more depth about the equations and details. This created a buffet style course that was flexible to both casual curiosity auditors and aspiring academic scientific .

Accomplishments: I completed all of the course material, and scored a 82% on the finale exam (the only graded portion of the course). The exam only required a 60% to pass, but was designed such that a portion of the later questions were only solvable if you went beyond the material expected of you in the base course. It was a refreshingly challenging final exam.
